IAC Bin Vent Conversion Saves Money, Maintenance, and Equipment Wear

Outdated and unreliable equipment causes inefficient production processes and can affect safety and cleanliness within facilities. Conversion of this equipment results in better safety, energy savings, reduced maintenance costs, prolongs the life of filters, and, overall, limits wear and tear on equipment.

IAC recently helped a customer convert two Shaker style bin vent filters to pulse-jet bin vent filters. The equipment, located in an area with low overhead space, required a unique process solution to create working equipment that benefitted the production process.

“There are two units mounted to one silo tank. They split the tank into two separate sections by welding a solid steel wall in the middle,” said Steve Klein, Sales Engineer. The company wanted the units replaced; however, the installation would have cost twice as much due to the low headroom, as we would have had to remove the roof and rent a crane.”

With height restrictions only allowing for a side access or bottom load unit, IAC suggested converting to a pulse jet design by cutting off the top of each unit, removing the shaker rack, and welding in a bottom load tube sheet and clean air plenum utilizing pleated filters. With this conversion, IAC delivered a newly refreshed and reliable set of bin vents, with the additional benefit of the use of common parts.

The main advantage of swapping the bin vents to pulse-jet is the lowered cost of maintenance. The pulse-jet system stays on-line while compressed air can be blown through the bags in cycles to clean them more thoroughly, and only when required. This will increase filter bag life, and limits the dust exposure to the employees.
